South Cove is in the middle of a drought and as the sun continues to beat down tempers are beginning to fray. Jill has somehow offended her best friend Amy, her Aunt Jackie has her telling lies for her, and the newly formed Water Conservation Committee is gunning for her.

Then Kacey, a new arrival in South Cove is found dead on the beach. When Jill’s last remaining friend becomes a suspect Jill steps in and begins to investigate determined to find the real killer and clear her friend’s name.

 

Cozy mysteries are one of my ‘go to’ comfort reads. I just love them, well usually I love the first couple of books in a series before the novelty starts to wear off. As a genre they really are a hard field to hoe. I mean they’re generally set in a small quaint town, the sort of place you’d want to retire or raise your kids….except for the murder rate that’s higher than Caracas.

So I read the first couple in this series and as I tend to do moved on. When I saw this book at Netgalley I wondered how the series was going and requested it.

And it’s great.

Lynn Cahoon seems to be that very rare author who can keep a series like this alive and interesting even after six books. I’m thinking I need to climb back on this horse and read some of the books I’ve missed.

When Jill discovered a significant historical site in her back yard she found herself at odds with Craig Thomas who takes the lions share of the towns funding for that sort of thing. With the possibly corrupt mayor siding with Thomas and evidence suggesting that the site in question was actually somewhere else things aren’t looking good for her getting the funding to preserve the site.

Then Thomas shows up dead and suddenly Jill is a suspect. It’s left to her to investigate and find the real killer before the killer turns his attention to her.

 

IMG_2704I generally read two or three books a week, but for a couple of weeks I’ve had the flu and that’s slowed me down a fair bit. I’ll literally read a couple of pages and then fall asleep. All that goes to say is that this book has been with me for a while, and if I’m totally honest it’s been a bit of a comfort to me in my miserable self-pitying state.

Mission to Murder really is like a cute shaggy dog sleeping on the end of your bed (thanks to Roscoe for a rare still moment). As a cozy mystery or a book to read on the beach, it’s kind of perfect.

When Jill Gardner moved to South Cove, CA she was looking for a fresh start after her divorce and a quiet life running a café / bookshop. But then one of her close friends, Miss Emily tells her the council and a developer are trying to bully her into selling out and shortly thereafter she turns up dead. Jill knows there is something hokey going on and convinces the town’s detective to investigate.
Adding to her woes, Miss Emily left everything to her except the family bible which she left to her greedy relatives. Now the family are threatening to sue, council is threatening to condemn the house, someone is stealing from Miss Emily’s estate and a murderer is on the loose. Throw into the mix Aztec gold and expensive art works and the scene is set for a bit of a mystery romp.

Guidebook to Murder isn’t perfect, then again nobody really expects this genre to be considered for the Man Booker Prize. The story is quite straightforward, entertaining without ever being particularly challenging. But Jill is pretty damned awesome (what’s not to love about an amateur sleuth who runs a book store?) and even if the male characters don’t light up the pages, the female characters who inhabit her world are really quite delightful and set this book a little higher than most in the genre.
