The Philosopher’s Flight was brilliant. One of the most interesting and original novels I’ve read in a good long while. It followed Robert Weekes as he enters Radcliffe College with the goal of being the first male to ever join the R&E Service as a flying medic rescuing wounded soldiers in France. The Philosopher’s Flight ended with him graduating and being accepted into R&E.

The Philosopher’s War begins with him landing in France and joining the 5th Division, a motley group of misfits and malcontents, overworked and undermanned. As he starts rescuing soldiers from the front lines his comrades slowly warm to him and finally accept him. But he is much more than just an R&E flyer. He’s the lynch pin in an audacious plan to force Germany to surrender. A plan which if it fails could see him executed for treason.

That’s if he even survives.

The Philosophers War is so different to book one that it wasn’t easy to get into. Pretty much everything from The Philosopher’s Flight was tossed into the fire and I had to start again. Robert even lost his name, going from Weekes to Candarelli.

But honestly this book is brilliant. It’s just so imaginative and original that you can’t help but love it.

Max and her team of time travelling historians return for another romp along the timeline. In this episode they visit St Paul’s Cathedral to salvage whatever they can as it’s crashing down around them. Then it’s on to 13th century Florence where the bonfire of the vanities is in full swing and a bunch of works by Botticelli have an appointment with the flames. Finally it’s to Thermopylae where they find themselves accidentally risking the timeline and possibly altering history. The Spartans can’t win, can they??

 

No Time Like the Past is great, it’s entertaining and fun…occasionally very funny. The one thing it isn’t is fresh. So while I enjoyed this book…yes I probably even loved it, I can’t help but think that the best is behind us. We’re not quite at the shark jumping moment just yet but it must be getting close.

 

Chronicles of St Mary’s Short Stories

For lovers of the madcap time travelling historians of St Mary’s there are three very short stories available in Kindle, E-Book and Audiobook versions.  At the time of this post, all three were available for free from audible.com so my recommendation is to get them from there.  They’re good, I just don’t know if they’re worth paying for.

A Trail Through Time (by Jodi Taylor)

Leon and Max both died. And now they’re both back. In this episode they must do battle with brutal time police who are hunting them down for messing with the time line in a St Mary’s of an alternate dimension.

You know how sometimes day-time soap operas kill off a character and then six months later their identical twin brother shows up, usually to do a little ratings CPR…well to be honest this book really feels like that. It’s still quite good though.
